The Grand Tour So Far

EuroClimbing.com filmed Adam Ondra redpointing Action Directe (8c+) in mid-May this year. No doubt the quality could be better, but the energy with which Ondra climbs the route is palpable. He really wants this route! It's refreshing to find a young, talented climber doing old routes, other people's routes, other disciplines, and being honest about the ratings. There are too many people climbing their own routes exclusively and dishing out impressive ratings. While it's nice to see that someone did such-and-such route at whatever grade at their crag, why not go out and try other crags where there are other routes with confirmed grades, so as to have a broader idea of what such-and-such grade is? Just because a route is "harder than anything I've ever done before" doesn't mean it's a number or letter grade higher. A professional climber and the average climber will have a different idea of what a 7a+ is, but who's actually right? A topic for another post. In the meantime, enjoy the film! |
